Beeston is an area of south Leeds, West Yorkshire, England with a population of about 16,000[1]. Parts of Beeston could be considered inner city due to the whereabouts of the area in relation to Holbeck and the city centre, though not the whole area can be classed as such. Beeston itself has two distinct areas - Beeston Hill which is home to the majority Asian and ethnic population and which has been a run down area but is getting some much needed investment in the early part of the 21st century - and Beeston Village/Beeston Park which, whilst still working class and mostly terrace housing, is largely a white and more afluent area. There does however seem to be an emergence of young professionals to the area.. Local facilities

Despite its reputation, Beeston probably has the best facilities of any area in Leeds. It has two large health centres, the White Rose shopping centre on its doorstep, Elland Road stadium, South Leeds Stadium which includes the indoor bowling, indoor Tennis Centre, athletics stadium, rugby pitches and five a side pitches and a full size swimming pool (due late 2006). The city centre of Leeds is only a short bus ride away and the M1 and M62 motorways are easily accessed. Elland Road is the home stadium of the football team Leeds United. ... Youth and Urban life

There are many troubles that occur in Beeston, mainly in the youth. Beeston Hill (where most of the asian ethnics are situated) is home to a gang known as the 'Beeston Massive Crew', abbreviated BMC. This is a troublesome youth that contribute to minor crimes and mischief. There is also the 'Paki Hating Crew', abbreviated PHC, which is the other gang in which rivalries occur with the BMC. The PHC is often known as the more racist group, as seen from the name.


London bombings

Beeston was the focus of unwanted attention following the 7th July 2005 London bombings when it was revealed that a number of the bombers lived in and had strong links to the area. On 12th July, two properties in Beeston were raided by police in connection with the attacks. According to West Yorkshire Police, a significant amount of explosive material was found in the raids and a controlled explosion was carried out at one of the properties. The bombers

  • Shehzad Tanweer, responsible for and killed in the Aldgate Tube bomb, lived with his parents at Colwyn Road running the local fish and chip shop.
  • Hasib Hussain, responsible for detonating the bomb on the No. 30 bus in Tavistock Square which killed 13 people including himself, was born and raised in Beeston and was living there at the time of the bombings.
  • Ejaz Fiaz, also from Beeston, was named as a possible co-conspirator and initially suspected of being the bomber on the Picadilly Line train, and has since disappeared.

After-effects

Following the 7th July bombings, the Muslim population of Beeston was in a state of both shock and fear. When news began to emerge of the Beeston link to the attacks, the majority of the population came out to condemn the atrocities. Since that time the community has cooperated closely with the police, but the local economy is still recovering from much of the negative media attention.


There was a significant pulling together of people across the community with two Beeston Together for Peace marches being held. Each were joined by hundreds of people, some as the procession passed. The second procession ended at Millennium Square in Leeds city centre, uniting with people from other parts of Leeds for an interfaith vigil.
