They walk, sit in a cafe, walk again, take a boat trip, ride in a car, and go to Celine's apartment. Jesse is married and has a child, and Celine has a boyfriend, but, as becomes clear in the course of them talking, both are not very happy. As thirtysomethings, they look back at their meeting with both longing and regret; at their naive worldview, their steadfast belief in the power of love, they simply accept the mistakes of the past in order to start all over again. However, the nine years apart, and the divergences of their paths in life, has revealed the significance of their initial, brief encounter.

At the film's conclusion, Celine warns Jesse that he will miss his plane back to the United States. Jesse answers: "I know".

Delta Sierra Arts » Before Sunset (624 words)
Before Sunset condenses so much into its 80 minutes of real time that the temptation is to just review it in a tumble of breathless pauses, clauses, and run-on sentences.
But Before Sunset is that kind of magical movie: simultaneously knowing about the effects of the passage of time and yet optimistic.
Before Sunset is rich with the slight gestures of two people completely comfortable with each other: there’s a moment where Delpy brushes her hand against Hawke and it’s almost erotic in its intensity.
The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Before Sunset (394 words)
Before Sunset, actually, is nearly filmed in real time, as Celine and Jessie spend just over an hour together walking through Paris, nine years older and now looking at their lives from the more cynical perspective of their early 30s.
To their credit, Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy knowingly mirror Before Sunset's flaws in its narrative: the dispiriting sense of knowing what the first film left a mystery is echoed in Jessie and Celine's wizened interactions, and the prosaic deflation of Before Sunrise's ideal one-night-fling similarly haunts and obsesses the characters's older selves.
In that way, Before Sunset is just as good as its predecessor — but, hardened by the years in between, it will never capture the magic that made the first film a classic, and might possibly even lessen Before Sunrise's original power.
