History

The British Army used the Barracks as a Recruit Training Depot for the garrison in Ireland. The barracks was handed over to the Irish military on 31 January 1922, the first British barracks to be surrendered to the new Free State. Robert Erskine Childers was executed in the barracks on 24 November 1922. The Free State Army closed the barracks in the 1920s as it size and lak of defences made it unsuitable for further use.
