Belcher is a village located in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 272.


Geography

Belcher is located at 32°45'2" North, 93°50'2" West (32.750518, _93.833772)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.0 km˛ (1.6 mi˛). 4.0 km˛ (1.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 272 people, 99 households, and 78 families residing in the village. The population density is 67.3/km˛ (174.7/mi˛). There are 107 housing units at an average density of 26.5/km˛ (68.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 75.37% White, 23.90% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 99 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.7% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.13.


In the village the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.5 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $39,167, and the median income for a family is $40,469. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,954. 4.8% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Belcher tools encompassed stone celts (hatchets or chisels), arrow points which had tiny pointed stems, flint scrapers and gravers, sandstone hones, bone awls, needles and chisels, shell hoes, spoons and saws, and pottery spindle weights.
Belcher pottery was superior to that of the Bossier people and, indeed, is some of the best in the entire Caddoan area.
In all, late Belcher people were dispersed widely, and their way of life gave rise to the generalized cultural base that existed at the time of European intrusion.
