UNESCO inscribed thirty-two of the towers onto its list in 1999, under the name Belfries of Flanders and Wallonia. In 2005, the group was enlarged to include 22 belfries in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy départments in northern France, and the belfry of Gembloux in Belgium.
