Plot

Bell Book and Candle follows Greenwich Village witch Gillian Holroyd (Kim Novak) who has been unlucky in love and restless with life. When publisher Shep Henderson (James Stewart) walks into her building, she becomes immediately infatuated. When she discovers he's about to marry an old friend of Gillian's, she casts a spell on Shep, but must face the distinction between love and witchcraft. When first released in October of 1958, Bell Book and Candle was a moderate success. In early 1959, the film received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Costume Design, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Comedy. Something Old, Nothing New: Bell, Book and Beatnik (983 words)
In Bell Book and Candle, Quine offers a nice urban flavor with a dash of the then-fashionable beat movement, and the stylishness of it all must have been a pleasant surprise in this style-starved period of moviemaking.
Sally in Voice of the Turtle is an actress, Gillian in Bell Book and Candle is a witch, but they both find that a a fling with a handsome young man leads to emotional attachments that they weren’t ready for.
The gay subtext of Bell, Book and Candle, as in some of Noel Coward’s plays, takes an attitude that was typical then but would seem downright homophobic to today’s audiences.
