History

The village used to thrive due to the business of a local dye factory owned by Thomas Rycroft. The factory is sadly not in operation anymore. The employee count was less than 20, and the factory went out of business recently (late 2005). It is situated in the "Bottom end" of the village. The local landmark chimney has also been demolished.

Following a fire at the "Top end" factory several years ago, a new housing estate has been developed with houses designed to look traditional. This effect has been carried out on neighbouring estates as well.

Before 1804, Belmont was known as Hordern[1] and was in the township of Sharples in the parish of Bolton-le-Moors[2]. Sharples is a surname, and may refer to: Carrie Sharples Ellen Sharples Ena Sharples, fictional character Mel Sharples, fictional character Pamela Sharples, Baroness Sharples Pita Sharples Richard Sharples As a placename: Sharples, Greater Manchester Categories: | | ...

Reservoirs

The reservoir in Belmont is called Ward's Reservoir. It is known locally as the Blue Lagoon. There is a much larger reservoir to the north of the village called Belmont Reservoir which is home to Bolton Sailing Club.
