Belograchik (Bulgarian: Белоградчик listen ) is a town in northwestern Bulgaria in the Vidin Province. Belogradchik, which literally means "small white town," is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River. The town is famous for its unique and impressive rock formations, the Belogradchik Rocks, which cover an area of 90 square kilometers and reach up to 200 meters in height. The Kale Fortress The Belogradchik fortress is a historical and architectural monument.
In his reign, the Belogradchik fortress became the second-best in size and importance after the Vidin fortress, which was his main castle.
In the end of the 14-th century the Bulgarian land was conquered by the Otoman Empire, and in 1396 the Turks took over the Belogradchik castle.

Astronomical observatory - Belogradchik is a division of the Institute of Astronomy (part of the Bugarian Academy of Sciences).
It is situated near the small town of Belogradchik (in the north-west part of Bulgaria).
The observatory was built in 1961 by a group of asrtronomy enthusiasts led by Hristo Kostov who was a teacher in physics at the Belogradchik high school.
