Ben Hill County is a county located in the Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 17,484. The county's county seat is Fitzgerald, Georgia⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 658 km² (254 mi²). 652 km² (252 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 17,484 people, 6,673 households, and 4,631 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (69/mi²). There are 7,623 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.25% White, 32.64% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.85% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 4.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,673 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.20% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non_families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.09.
