Ben Hill County is a county located in the Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 17,484. The county's county seat is Fitzgerald, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 658 km˛ (254 mi˛). 652 km˛ (252 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,484 people, 6,673 households, and 4,631 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km˛ (69/mi˛). There are 7,623 housing units at an average density of 12/km˛ (30/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 63.25% White, 32.64% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.85% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 4.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,673 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.20% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non_families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,100, and the median income for a family is $33,023. Males have a median income of $26,750 versus $19,547 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,093. 22.30% of the population and 18.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.30% are under the age of 18 and 17.60% are 65 or older.

In that year's general election, voters ratified the constitutional amendment on Nov. 6, 1906, which is considered the date of the county's creation (even though a state historical marker on the Ben Hill County courthouse square incorrectly cites the earlier date of the legislature's proposal of the amendment as the date of the county's creation).
Georgia's 146th county was named for former Confederate and U.S. Senator Benjamin Hill (1823-1882).
In 1945, Georgia voters ratified a new constitution -- one which provided an absolute limit of 159 counties, with an additional provision (see text) that no new country could be created except through consolidation of existing counties.
