Ben Jones (born August 30, 1941) is an American actor and politician. He was born in Tarboro, North Carolina. He attended Woodrow Wilson high school in Portsmouth, Virginia. He then attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, graduating in 1964. Jones then embarked on an acting career. He is best known as Cooter on the successful television series The Dukes of Hazzard, in which he participated during its entire run, which lasted from 1979 to 1985. He has also participated in several other TV shows, several movies and over 80 theatre productions. Politics

Following the end of the Dukes of Hazzard, Jones entered politics. He is a Democrat. In 1986, he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives from Georgia. He ran again in 1988 for a House seat from Georgia, and that time won. He was reelected in 1990, but was defeated in 1992. Since his time in Congress, Jones has returned to acting, become a well-known political essayist and written one play. In 1998 he broke with most Democrats by asking President Bill Clinton to resign during the attempt to impeach him. Jones is still active in the Democratic Party. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives from Virginia in 2002, thus becoming one of very few recent American politicians to seek elective office in more than one state.
