Encyclopedia > Benaroya Hall

Benaroya Hall is a performance venue in Seattle, Washington that is the home of the Seattle Symphony. Opened in September of 1998 at a cost of $120 million, Benaroya quickly became noted for its technology-infused acoustics, touches of luxury, and prominent location in a complex thoroughly integrated into downtown. Benaroya houses two performance halls and occupies an entire city block in the center of the city, and has helped double the Seattle Symphony's budget and performances. The lobby of the hall features a large contribution of glass art by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly. Arts: Benaroya Hall (Seattle Weekly) (1202 words)
Benaroya Hall was built as a temple of the immaterial muse, but its lobby celebrates materiality: Downtown Seattle has never looked more urban, and urbane, than it does through the Benaroya's wraparound curtain wall.
Benaroya Hall is going to insist on perfect ensemble; anything less is cruelly exposed.
It isn't just the hall emphasizing high pitches; on Sunday the violas played with admirable finesse, as did the double-basses, while the cellos played with a hoarseness as disagreeable over the long haul as the first violins' knife-sharp attacks.
