Plot
Two former outlaws, Glyn McLyntock (James Stewart) and his friend Cole (Arthur Kennedy) lead a wagon-train from Missouri to the Oregon territory. McLyntock's history during the Kansas-Missouri border war haunts him throughout the film. Implications of McLyntock's criminal history are never fully explored, but McLyntock seems earnest in his wishes to forget his questionable past. The subtle theme of this film is one of redemption. A man can change his life, no matter the horribly bloody and murdurous acts he may have committed. The most poignant scene of the film involves McLyntock explaining to Laurie Baile, his smoking hot trail companion, the rope burns he bears from a prevous hanging attempt. This film displays the 1950's American fantasty of the domestic godess. Julie Adams plays Laurie Baile, a pioneer on the Oregon trail who not only remains stunningly attractive despite the rigors of the trail, but makes "good biscuits" as an obviously pleased McLyntock exhorts. After establishing a settlement, the group faces a harsh territory with diminishing supplies. McLyntock and Cole hear of a shipment of food being held by corrupt officials in Portland. They capture the goods, but McLyntock begins to question if he can trust Cole.
