After attending primary school, he joined the King's African Rifles, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major in the Second World War. In 1958 he was elected President General of the Democratic Party. He re-organized the Party and made it popular throughout Uganda. He won the 1961 general elections and became the First Prime Minister of Uganda. In 1964 Kiwanuka's party lost the elections to an alliance of Uganda People's Congress and Kabaka Yekka, paving the way for Milton Obote who subsquently became President of Uganda. Benedicto Kiwanuka was imprisoned in 1969 by the government of Milton Obote, and later released by Idi Amin who appointed him the First Ugandan Chief Justice. Benedicto Kiwanuka was born in May of 1922 in Kisabwa in the Buganda kingdom of Uganda, the son of a minor but wealthy Roman Catholic Buganda chief.
