In 1899, the Portugese government initiated the construction of the railroad to access the hinterland and the mineral wealth of the Belgian Congo. In 1902, the Sir Robert Williams, a friend of Cecil Rhodes, took over the construction and completed the connection to Luau at the border to the Congo in 1929. The line proved very successful and profitable. After independence, the Angolan civil war brought operations to a halt, and most of the infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. The Benguela Railway, which has made this new Atlantic all-rail route possible, is due to British enterprise and capital, used in co-operation with the Portuguese, and owes its existence to the foresight and perseverance of a Briton, Sir Robert Williams, one of the makers of modern Africa.
The completion of the Benguela Railway is commemorated by a granite boulder which was brought 800 miles to be placed on the concrete abutment of the bridge on the Angola side of the river.
