Benjamin is a city located in Knox County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 264. It is the county seat of Knox County6.


Geography

Benjamin is located at 33°35'0" North, 99°47'36" West (33.583419, _99.793394)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.7 km˛ (1.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 264 people, 97 households, and 64 families residing in the city. The population density is 98.0/km˛ (254.5/mi˛). There are 119 housing units at an average density of 44.2/km˛ (114.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 89.77% White, 3.03% African American, 0.00% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.92% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. 11.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 97 households out of which 36.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 30.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the city the population is spread out with 33.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,023, and the median income for a family is $38,125. Males have a median income of $29,750 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,138. 14.2% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
