Benkelman is a city located in Dundy County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,006. It is the county seat of Dundy County6.


Geography

Benkelman is located at 40°3'2" North, 101°32'1" West (40.050615, _101.533660)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 km˛ (0.8 mi˛). 2.0 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,006 people, 458 households, and 266 families residing in the city. The population density is 491.7/km˛ (1,267.6/mi˛). There are 576 housing units at an average density of 281.5/km˛ (725.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 97.51% White, 0.00% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 458 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 38.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.76.


In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 21.1% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 29.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 79.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,788, and the median income for a family is $37,813. Males have a median income of $26,741 versus $19,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,700. 11.9% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
