Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said Lott could make up for his statement [praising Strom Thurmond's 1948 run for president on a segregationist platform] by opening the door to legislation favored by the Black Caucus, pushing for a minimum wage increase, expanded affordable housing and a prescription drug benefit.
Thompson, a political powerhouse, sees the difference more sharply: A Democrat, he has deep Delta roots, a network of loyal grass-roots supporters and is facing a Republican novice recruited by the GOP just so he can have an opponent.
Thompson also said he is a supporter of affirmative action and equal opportunity, health care improvements and economic development.
