In the Persian campaign of 1796 Bennigsen was one of the leading commanders of the Russian army.
In 1801 Bennigsen was one of the leaders of the palace revolution as a result of that Paul I was murdered and young Alexander became the Russian Emperor.
In the end of this campaign Bennigsen was removed from the Headquarters because of this disagreement with Kutuzov.
Bennigsen was heavily critisized for the battle of Friedland and for the decline of discipline in the army and now retired for some years, but in the campaign of 1812 he reappeared in the army in various responsible positions.
He was present at Borodino, and defeated Murat in the engagement of Tarutino where he himself was wounded in the leg, but on account of a quarrel with Marshal Kutusov, the Russian commander-in-chief, he was compelled to retire from active military employment.
Bennigsen participated in battles of Bautzen and Lützen and led one of the columns which made the decisive attack on the last day of the battle of Leipzig (16th-19th of October 1813).
