Bennington Township is a township located in Shiawassee County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,017.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 95.3 km˛ (36.8 mi˛). 94.5 km˛ (36.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.87% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,017 people, 1,074 households, and 906 families residing in the township. The population density is 31.9/km˛ (82.7/mi˛). There are 1,108 housing units at an average density of 11.7/km˛ (30.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 97.58% White, 0.17% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,074 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.5% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.6% are non-families. 12.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the township the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $54,786, and the median income for a family is $60,609. Males have a median income of $40,465 versus $31,528 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,841. 3.1% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

He was born in Mishicot township, Manitowoc county, November 7, 1849, and is a son of Henry and Minnie (Heberlein) Mueller, natives of Germany who were married in Milwaukee, whence the former had come alone and the latter with her parents.

On of the thriftiest farmers of the township of Colon is the subject of the present sketch, Adam Bower, who was born December 18, 1813, in Springport, Cayuga county, New York.
The people of the township found in him an able and careful counsellor, and guardian of their public trusts, and they gave those trusts into his hands in the fullest measure.
Coming into that township in 1837, he was necessarily intimately connected with its growth, development and prosperity, and was always esteemed as one of its most substantial citizens.
