Encyclopedia > Benny Elon

Binyamin "Benny" Elon (1954-) is a Member of Knesset. Elon is ninth-generation Jerusalemite and has resided in Beit El for 20 years.

Binyamin Elon served two terms as Tourism Minister of the State of Israel and is also the chairman of the small right-wing Moledet party. Elon replaced the assassinated Moledet leader Rehavam Zeevi, who also held the post of Tourism Minister.

Elon rejects the mainstream efforts for establishing peace in the middle east (see Road map for peace). Instead he suggests an alternative proposal he calls The Right Road to Peace, centering around transfer of Israeli Arabs. See Elon Peace Plan.

A Potential Middle East Solution (947 words)
Elon noted that, given a viable home to move to and the opportunity for national self-determination, these refugees did not cultivate the desire to return to the Arab lands where they had lived in most cases for nearly 2,000 years, despite all the possessions and property they had left behind.
Elon concluded that in a gradual and peaceful way, by consent of all nations involved, negotiators ought to formulate a plan to integrate the Palestinian population in the refugee camps with the Palestinian population in Jordan to form a viable nation capable of self-determination with the necessary territorial integrity for independence.
Elon presented his plan not as one that would please every individual affected by it, but as one that would constructively seek a regional political resolution to what he sees at the major problem in Israel.
