Benson is a village located in Woodford County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 408.


Geography

Benson is located at 40°50'60" North, 89°7'18" West (40.849978, -89.121586)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 408 people, 172 households, and 117 families residing in the village. The population density is 926.6/km² (2,338.6/mi²). There are 183 housing units at an average density of 415.6/km² (1,048.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.26% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 172 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the village the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 25.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $40,500, and the median income for a family is $55,536. Males have a median income of $37,031 versus $21,161 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,358. 4.1% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Benson paints a picture in which he is a crusader who could not be stifled from exposing corruption and was fired as a consequence.
In this regard and in retrospect, Benson’s position suffers from the fact that, whomever it was that turned him in, and for whatever reason, he was guilty of fraudulently collecting Social Security benefits and tax evasion as evidenced by the fact that he was indicted and convicted.
