Benson and Hedges was founded in 1873 by Richard Benson and William Hedges as Benson and Hedges Ltd. The company was formed to make cigarettes for the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward.
Benson and Hedges Ltd in the UK was acquired by Gallaher Limited in 1955 (now the Gallaher Group).
Throughout the 1980s Benson and Hedges was the major sponsor of international cricket in Australia, holding the naming rights for most of the one day international tournaments such as the World Series Cup and the World Championship of Cricket.

During this time he would represent both his University, which he would captain to the quarter finals of the Benson and Hedges cup in 1989 and his county.
In this same year he was also to make his debut for England, against Australia at Old Trafford, his home ground.
