Bergen op Zoom - Wikipedia (1747 words)
Het is niet precies bekend wanneer Bergen op Zoom stadsrechten heeft gekregen omdat de stadsarchieven bij een grote stadsbrand in 1397 verloren zijn gegaan, maar er wordt aangenomen dat dit bij of al voor het afscheiden van de stad als heerlijkheid is gebeurd.
Bergen op Zoom bleef ook na het vertrek van de Fransen in 1814 een belangrijke garnizoensstad.
Naast deze monument heeft Bergen op Zoom nog tal van andere monumenten, waaronder vele woonhuizen en een aantal kerken zoals de monumentale onze lieve vrouw van Lourdeskerk uit 1928 gelegen aan de Prins Bernhardlaan, de Heilig Hartkerk aan het Piusplein en de protestantse Ontmoetingskerk aan het Bolwerk.

The former fortress town of Bergen op Zoom ("Bergen on the Edge"), in the west of the province of Noord-Brabant, is now, since the construction of the Schelde-Rhine Canal, linked with the Oosterschelde by a train of locks, bringing it within easy reach of Antwerp and Rotterdam by sea.
Major contributions to its economy are made by oyster and lobster culture, fishing for anchovies, the growing of asparagus and strawberries and a variety of industries (metalworking, woodworking, textiles, foodstuffs, etc).
An important trading town in the Middle Ages, Bergen op Zoom received its municipal charter in the 13th century and was granted exemption from customs duties in the 14th.
