Bergenhus is a medieval fortress complex consisting of a medieval hall and a defensive tower. During the 13th century it was a royal residence with a guildhall, Haakon's Hall, from around 1260, in its centre. The Rosenkrantz tower actually consists of two towers. Around 1270, King Magnus VI Lagabøte first built a tower near the sea. This was extended and modified in the mid-16th century by Erik Rosenkrantz into a Renaissance fortress tower. The medieval part of the tower has three floors and a cellar which was probably used for storage. Magnus Lagabøte (lit. ... Originally, the Christ Church, Bergen's medieval cathedral, was also situated on the premises. This however was torn down in the 16th century as the fortifications were extended under Danish rule.


The buildings, including the Haakon's Hall, were left in ruin as a German ammunition ship exploded in 1944, but the buildings have later been restored.
