Bergkamen, a fairly new town, 15 km to the north east of Dortmund, on the edge of the Muensterland, was founded in 1966 by the merging of 6 smaller communities.
Bergkamen is a lively town, open to new experiences and ideas, that is well-known throughout the region for its many cultural events, such as the Harbour Festival in June or the Light Market in October.
Furthermore, Bergkamen‘s theatre performances at the “studio theater bergkamen“ and numerous exhibitions in the town‘s own art gallery “sohle1“ or the “Stadtmuseum“ regularly inspire lots of visitors.
My district includes the eight towns of Bergkamen, Fröndenberg, Kamen, Lünen, Schwerte, Selm, Unna and Werne and the two communities of Bönen and Holzwickede.
We shall start in the extreme South, in Schwerte, visit thegolden Flemish altar dating from the year 1523 in St. Viktor's church, and subsequently enjoy the un-touched nature of the Ruhraue on a walk.
In Bergkamen, the only town in which mining still has a home today, the Haus Aden/Monopol pit is the last of over 30 collieries in my district to still produce coal.
