Encyclopedia > Bergshrund

A Bergshrund is the geological term given to a split or crevasse occupying the firn layer of a glacier. These usually form in polar-glacier where temperature are low enough to make the ice more prone to violent movements due to the brittle nature of the neve at this climtic region. Bergshrunds are caused by stresses induced by the perpetual movement of the glacier over and through lithosphere of varying densities and types. They are extemely trecherous to pass and usually intrude to a depth of well over 100 metres, anyone unlucky enough to fall into these icy depths would inevitably face their death, if not from the colossal fall, then from the sub-zero temperatures prevailent there.
