Berkley is a town located in Bristol County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,749.


History

Berkley was first settled in 1638 and was officially incorporated in 1735. It was formerly a part of Taunton, Massachusetts.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.0 km˛ (17.4 mi˛). 42.8 km˛ (16.5 mi˛) of it is land and 2.1 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.72% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,749 people, 1,843 households, and 1,566 families residing in the town. The population density is 134.2/km˛ (347.6/mi˛). There are 1,885 housing units at an average density of 44.0/km˛ (114.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 96.73% White, 0.56% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,843 households out of which 47.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.0% are non-families. 10.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.11 and the average family size is 3.35.


In the town the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 36.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $66,295, and the median income for a family is $69,222. Males have a median income of $45,154 versus $31,639 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,652. 2.5% of the population and 0.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.6% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
