Encyclopedia > Bermuda Bowl

Bermuda Bowl is the term for World team championships in contract bridge named after the first edition held in Bermuda, in 1950. Contract bridge, usually known simply as bridge, is a trick-taking card game of skill and chance (the relative proportions depend on the variant played). ...

The event started out as a competition between USA, Europe and Britain. The first edition in 1950 was won by USA. After this, the Bermuda Bowl became a yearly challenge match between the USA and the European Champions. Over time, the format has changed several times, including more and more teams.

Currently the Bermuda Bowl is held every two years with 22 teams participating: The host country, 6 from Europe, 3 from North America, 2 from South America, 2 from Asia & Middle East, 1 from Central America & Caribbean, 3 from Pacific Asia, 2 from South Pacific, 2 from Africa. The Venice Cup and Senior Bowl are held at the same venue in a similar format. The World Transnational Open Team Championship starts after the qualifying stages for the three major events have been concluded. The World Team Championships in contract bridge for women players only is also known as Venice Cup, because the first edition was held in Venice, in 1974. ...

The 2007 Bermuda Bowl (38th) was held in Shanghai, China. Norway (Geir Helgemo–Tor Helness, Boye Brogeland–Erik Saelensmide, Glenn Grøtheim–Ulf Tundal) claimed their first title. Pre-event favourites Italy went out in the quarterfinals against South Africa while USA 2 failed to reach the knockout stage.[1]

The 2009 event is scheduled to take place in São Paulo, Brazil.

38th World Team Championships (826 words)
The final match against USA was close only in the first half; thereafter the descendants of the Vikings left no room for doubt and emerged comfortable winners at the end of the final, with a margin of some 90 IMPs.
This victory was long overdue, and came following a list of Norway's near misses in the Bermuda Bowl – second in Chile in 1993, third in Tunisia in 1997, second in Paris in 2001 and third in Monaco in 2003.
It is awarded to the winner of the open teams competition between the representatives of the WBF geographical zones.
Blue team (bridge) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1031 words)
In 1976, the Bermuda Bowl was won by the USA and the Olympiad by Brazil, marking the end of the Blue Team's dominance.
However, the best-known controversy occurred in 1975, when the Bermuda Bowl was held at its home site of Bermuda; it was described in detail in Bob Hamman's autobiography At the Table.
Ironically, although the Italians were allowed to stay, the Bermuda Bowl authorities placed blocks underneath the tables to prevent any further foot contact.
