Bermuda Hundred was the first incorporated town in the English settlement of Virginia. Founded in 1613, six years after Jamestown, it was the home of John Rolfe, who single-handedly founded Virginia's tobacco industry. Rolfe had been a businessman in England when he realised that the settlement of Virginia created the possibility to counter Spain's monopoly on the supply of tobacco within Europe, which had seriously affected the balance of trade between England and Spain. In the process, he realised, he could earn a great deal of money. Taking tobacco seeds he acquired in England, he boarded the ill-starred Sea Venture which was leading a fleet to Jamestown in 1609. A storm broke the fleet apart, and, after fighting it for three days, the Admiral of the Virginia Company, Sir George Somers, drove the foundering ship onto the reefs of Bermuda, saving the 150 passengers and crew (and one dog) aboard. After the building of two new ships, the Deliverance and Patience, most of the survivors set sail for Jamestown ten months later (although Bermuda would remain permanently settled, and Virginia's boundaries would be extended far enough out to sea in 1612 to include Bermuda). Rolfe left a wife and child buried in Bermuda, but in Virginia he married Pocahontas.
