Initially as the backing vocalist, Haug identified that Fanning would be more suited as the group's lead vocalist and exchanged roles. Also during the early time of the band, Fanning invited his old school friend Darren Middleton to join the band also. Solo venture In 2004, Fanning produced the debut solo album by Andrew Morris entitled Little By Little. In October 2005, through Dew Process, a Universal Records company headed up by Powderfinger's manager, Fanning released his debut solo album entitled Tea and Sympathy which debuted at #1 on the Australian ARIA Albums chart. This album was very different to any albums by Powderfinger in that it was very folk and acoustic in style, while Powderfinger are a rock group, which only occasionally venture into ballads, and even then they are quite rock orientated. As a result fans were divided, though the different style did draw new fans who prefer the more acoustic sound.
