Controversy

While with Joy Division he used a number of different names. Accusations of Neo-Nazism dogged the band for their whole career; Sumner changed his name to the German sounding 'Bernard Albrecht' added some fuel to the accusations. He also used the names 'Bernard Dicken' and 'Bernard Albrecht-Dicken'. The name 'New Order' is also believed by some to have Neo-Nazi connotations reflecting on the band. Sumner, Joy Division and New Order have consistently denied these accusations.[citation needed] The terms Neo-Nazism and Neo-Fascism refer to any social or political movement to revive Nazism or Fascism, respectively, and postdates the Second World War. ...

Contrary to popular belief, he was born Bernard Sumner - becoming Bernard Dicken during childhood when he was adopted by his mother's partner. Dicken, which is often incorrectly reported as his birth name, is an affectation based on his adoptive name.
