In 1937, Philadelphia radio mogul, A. Atwater Kent offered to pay up to $25,000 for the restoration of the house and commissioned historical architect Richardson Brognard Okie to do the work. Kent then purchased the two adjacent properties to develop a "civic garden." In 1941, the entire property, including the historic house and courtyard, were given to the city of Philadelphia. Betsy Ross (January 1, 1752 - January 30, 1836) is reputed to have sewed the first American flag.
She was born Elizabeth ("Betsy") Griscom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was the eighth-born child of Samuel and Rebecca Griscom who were both Quakers (her father was a master builder).
While working at her job, she fell in love with another apprentice, John Ross who was the son of an Episcopal assistant rector at Christ Church Pennsylvania and was himself a member of the Episcopal clergy.
