Bette was a CBS television show which premiered on October 11, 2000 lasting one season, with Bette Midler playing herself - a "divine celebrity" who is adored by her fans. There were several similarities to Bette's actual career through the show's run and many of her celebrity friends appeared as themselves during the show's short run. Guest stars included Danny DeVito, George Segal, Sharon Lawrence, David James Elliott, Lily Tomlin, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Danza, Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John and Jon Lovitz, all as themselves. The Halloween episode featured Dolly Parton as herself with her and Bette filming a TV special. Born in 1950 in Sheffield, Clive Betts was educated at the Longley School in Sheffield and the King Edward VII School, Sheffield; and Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he received a degree in economics and politics.
Clive Betts had been elected as a councillor to Sheffield City Council in 1976, he was its deputy leader under David Blunkett for a year in 1986, and succeeded Blunkett as the council leader in 1987.
Clive Betts was made an Opposition Whip under Tony Blair in 1996, and after the 1997 General Election, he entered the government as an Assistant Whip, he was promoted in 1998 when he became a (full) Whip, with the title of Lord Commissioner to the Treasury.
