IMDb profile

Bette was a CBS television show which premiered on October 11, 2000, lasting one season, with Bette Midler playing herself - a "divine celebrity" who is adored by her fans. There were several similarities to Bette's actual career through the show's run, and many of her celebrity friends appeared as themselves during the show's short run. Guest stars included Danny DeVito, George Segal, Sharon Lawrence, David James Elliott, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Danza, Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John, Jon Lovitz, and the ladies from The View all as themselves. The Halloween episode featured Dolly Parton as herself, with her and Bette filming a TV special. Bette ended up getting Dolly arrested after stealing one of Dolly's outfits and going trick or treating dressed as Dolly. The pilot episode featued Lindsay Lohan as Bette's daughter Rose, the role was then replaced with Marina Malota for the regular run of the series. "Bette" was supposed to be a HUGE television event, marking the debut of the Divine Miss M on series tv. However what started out as the most hotly anticipated new comedy of the season soon turned into a disaster. The pilot episode guest starring Danny Devito was a strong opening to what was hoped to be a sure fire hit. CBS was hoping for another "I Love Lucy." However, week after week, the writing became weaker and the plots became thinner until the only thing holding the show together was Bette herself. Bette openly criticized the show and the network, even comparring the show to a ball of dung, and she the dung beatle!! Even with all the guest stars and the huge star power of Bette Midler, nothing could mask the weak writting and poor handling of the show and its star. Kevin Dunn, who played Bette's husband bailed out half way through the series and was replaced by Robert Hays. This was such an opportunity that was unfortunately wasted. The show started hemoriging viewers by the week and the show was quickly cancelled before all of the episodes had aired.
