The Betuweroute project comprises upgrading the existing 48km Rotterdam Port Railway, which runs from the Europoort at Maasvlakte via the Waalhaven container rail service centre to the Kijfhoek shunting yard, and constructing a new double-track line that parallels the A15 motorway to the German border near Emmerich.
Betuweroute represents the country's largest infrastructure project and is being strongly promoted as an environmentally-friendly form of freight transport, eventually handling 43 million tonnes a year in an operation involving 750m-long trains, each of which will carry the equivalent load of 60 highway lorries.
The government decision to build the Betuweroute was taken in 1994 and was ratified by a commission and parliament in 1995.
