GENUKI: Bewcastle, Cumberland (2408 words)
Bewcastle is a large parish, bordered on the north by Scotland, on the west by the parishes of Kirkandrews-on-Esk and Stapleton, on the east by Northumberland County, and on the south by Lanercost parish.
That Bewcastle was of some significance to them is evidenced by the presence, to this day, of the Bewcastle Cross, believed to mark the burial place of the Anglian King, Alcfrith, and erected in the seventh or eighth century.
Bewcastle fell under the authority of the ancient diocese of Carlisle and wills prior to 1858 were proved in the consistory court there.
