One of the ancient trade and cultural centers of Azerbaijan, Beylagan was comfortably situated on the Mil and Mugan plain.
The headstones of Parfis type, dated III century, suggest that Beylagan was an independent government in that century.
According to the Arabic historian of IX century Belazuri's witness, during the invasion of Arabs in Albania, they managed to conquer Beylagan due to the imprisoned Caliph Osaman's agreement with the city population.

But in 1221 Beylagan was destroyed as a result of the attacks of mongols and since then the city have never reached the former grandeur.
The natives of Beylagan such as Mudjereddin Beylagani, Nedjmeddin Beylagani, Zaki bin Huseyn, Bin Beylagani, Shahabeddin Beylagani were well-known beyond the bounds of Azerbaijan.
The region is situated in the Mil plain and is surrounded by the Kur river in the north and by the Arazchay river in the south-east.
