The Dieppe map which is referred to in the book as being the eastern coast of Australia. The map with a section rotated at ninety degrees, and some of the claimed locations on the east coast. Beyond Capricorn, How Portuguese adventurers secretly discovered and mapped Australia and New Zealand 250 years before Captain Cook is a 2007 book by journalist Peter Trickett. The title refers to the sixteenth century maps which show land in a continent south of the Tropic of Capricorn, that is in the area of Australia. Trickett claims that the Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover Australia, between 1519–24, well before the first recognized landfall of Europeans in Australia in 1606 by Willem Janszoon. He claims that Cristóvão de Mendonça sailed down the east coast of Australia, passing through Botany Bay, around Wilsons Promontory to Kangaroo Island, before returning to Portuguese controlled Malacca via the North Island of New Zealand. He also claims the Portuguese, possibly Mendonça, charted the western Australian coast, as far south as the south west tip of Australia. While there has long been a Theory of Portuguese discovery of Australia, Peter Trickett has been the first to claim that the Dieppe map was composed of several portolan charts that were incorrectly put together by the French in Dieppe when they copied the original Portuguese charts. When this error is fixed after part of the map has been rotated at 90 degrees, the maps would show what he claims is a reasonably accurate depiction of Australia's eastern and western coasts. He also says that the French cartographers mistakenly joined the continent of 'Terra Java' or 'Java la Grande' to the island of Java, believing they were the same. The English language is a West Germanic language that originates in England. ...

According to the book, the first European to arrive in Australia was Diogo Pacheco, a relative of Duarte Pacheco, at Napier Broome Bay in the Kimberleys in north-western Australia in 1519. He is said to have been killed there in a battle with Aborigines while searching for gold. Most of the book, however, focuses on the claimed voyage of Mendonça along the eastern coast of Australia then to New Zealand shortly afterwards, and an unknown Portuguese explorer of the west coast. Trickett goes through almost every written location on the map, giving the English translation from the Portuguese, and explaining where he believes the place is located. He also mentions the Mahogany Ship, the ruin at Bittangabee Bay on the south coast of New South Wales, Carronade Island cannons, various Aboriginal legends and linguistic similarities, and a sinker found on the Queensland coast as further evidence of the Portuguese discovery of Australia. The book suggests that there were three ships initially, one of them could have been wrecked near Warrnambool giving rise to the Mahogany Ship folklore, another wrecked near Eden at the Bittangabee ruins, while only the flagship made it back to Malacca. Duarte Pacheco Pereira, (15th century) mysterious Portuguese captain and explorer of the Atlantic, his travels in the central Atlantic west of Cape Verde probably are more important than traditional history states. ...
