Beyond Rangoon is a 1995 film about Laura Bowman, an American tourist who vacations in Burma (Myanmar) in 1988, the year in which the 8888 Uprising takes place. She joins political rallies with university students protesting for democracy, and travels with U Aung Ko, the student leader, throughout Burma. There, they see the brutality of the dictators, and attempt to escape to Thailand. Its tagline is "Truth has a witness". The film was largely filmed in Malaysia, and is based on a true story. John Boorman's great new thriller, Beyond Rangoon, concerns the physical and spiritual journey of Laura Bowman (Patricia Arquette), who has suffered a terrible loss: the murder of her husband and child during the course of a burglary.
Beyond Rangoon has this kind of purity, the sort of thing you see in revivals of films made when movies were young.
Beyond Rangoon has poetry, too, in a drifting ride down the river that ends when Laura awakens, at the sound of a steam horn lowing, to the sight of a ship eclipsing the sun and our first look at daylight after a night-long ordeal.
deseretnews.com - Movie review: Beyond Rangoon | Deseret Morning News Web edition (196 words)
"Beyond Rangoon" is a disappointing attempt to mix a socially relevant message-movie with a commercial thriller, but the result is, sadly, rather aloof and largely unaffecting.
But in the end, "Beyond Rangoon" seems less about the horror suffered by the Burmese than the inconvenience suffered by an American tourist who has lost her passport.
"Beyond Rangoon" is rated R for violence, gore, attempted rape and profanity.
