Shri S. L. Bhairappa is one of the greatest contemporary kannada novelists. He was honoured with presidentship of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. He is the winner of Sahitya Akademi award and Niranjana award. His works are translated into most of Indian languages, including English and are widely read. His novels Matadaana, Tabbaliyu neenaade magane and Vamshavrukha have been made movies.

Doora saridaru (1962) - about love, intellectual companionship (bhouddia saahacharya) and marriage
Matadaana (1965) - about politics; was also made into a movie
Vamshavraksha (1965)- about family values
Jalapaata (1967) - mainly about life of an artist and his family
Naayi Neralu (1968) - about reincarnation
Tabbaliyu neenaade magane (1968) - about commercialisation and cow slaughter
Gruhabhanga (1970) - magnum opus - in a way autobiographical - to be read with 'Anweshane' and 'Bhitti'

Gruhana (1972)- conflict between a sanyasi (sage) and samsari(family man)
Bhairappa, who presided over the three-day meet, said that the present education system has failed to ensure the overall development of a students' personality.
Bhairappa said that music, drawing and drama are all a part of education.
Bhairappa took strong exception to a majority of films being made these days.
