Bharathapuzha is a river in India in the state of Kerala. It is also known as Nila.It originates from the western ghats bordering tamil Nadu with many sub rivers joining it.It passes through palghat and malappuram districts of kerala.It finally joins Arabian sea at Ponnani.Many of Kerala's popular writers live along the bank of Nila,namely M.T vasudevan Nair,M.Govindan,V.K.N etc. ...


Bharathapuzha is the life line of many villages like Ottappalam,Pattambi,Trithala,Kudallur,Kumbidi etc.

With a watershed of 6,186 km², Bharathapuzha basin is the largest among all the river basins in Kerala.
Though Bharathapuzha has a large basin, the water flow is relatively less compared to other long rivers in Kerala because a large portion of the basin is located in the comparatively drier regions (Tamil Nadu and Palakkad Gap).
The Bharathapuzha is extensively dammed and there are six reservoirs along the course of the river, and two more are under construction.

More than 80 per cent area of the district is covered with the Bharathapuzha basin and 12 to 13 per cent with the Bhavani basin and the balance area covered with Chalakudy and Kadalundi basins.

The action plan suggested the construction of 453 check-dams in Bharathapuzha and its four main tributaries at an estimated cost of Rs.157.50 crores.
