The five basic methods of Buddhist meditation include anapana or "mindfulness of breathing", mettā bhāvanā or "meditation on friendliness", both samatha or "tranquility meditations", and "contemplation of impermanence", the "six element practice", and "contemplation of conditionality", all vipassana or "insight meditations".
