The Bible Christian Church was a Methodist church. It was founded by William O'Bryan, a Wesleyan Methodist preacher, on 1815-10-18 in North Cornwall, with the first society, just 22 members, meeting at Lake Farm in Shebbear, Devon. Primarily concentrated in Cornwall and Devon, the church sent missionaries all over England. By 1820, missions had been established in the Channel Islands and in Kent. In 1809 the Reverend William Cowherd established the Bible Christian Church, in Salford, as a breakaway from the Swedenborgian New Church in King Street, his congregation had to take a vow not to eat meat.
And the area was receptive to religious innovation because the established church never really had a firm hold on the hearts and minds of Lancastrians.
The Church continued to provide the Vegetarian Society with its Leadership, notably in the person of Reverend James Clark who was pastor for nearly fifty years following BrothertonÂ’s death in 1857.
