Ritman spend so much money acquiring the books and a large collection of art that he got into financial problems. The bank intervened and the art colletion was sold. Disregarding the status of "protected National heritage" an important part of the books was taken over by the ING bank and brought to the vaults of a London auctioneer. After the sale of Ritmans company there was so much money left that all the books were returned to Ritman. A third of the library was later bought by the Dutch state. Among the treasures of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica are the Corpus Hermeticum published in 1471, the first illustrated edition of Dantes La Divina Commedia from 1481 and Cicero's "De officiis" printed in 1465.
