Bida or bid'a is an Islamic Term meaning innovation of beliefs or worship. Linguistically bida means 'a newly invented matter'. Literally it is religious practices not considered sunnah (the way of the prophet), which date back to Muhammad. The role of bida is hotly debated among Muslim scholars, some consider it to be a violation of sunnah (and has become a synonym for heresy), while others take the view that new situations that have arisen since the time of the prophet call for new teachings, as long as they do not contradict sunnah or Hadith.
