The film shows the events in an Egyptian family life after the father's death, three brother and one sister Nefisah (Sanaa Gamil) and their mother (Amina Rizk).


The older brother Sultan (Farid Shawki) turns to be a criminal , the middle brother Hassan leaves Cairo to work in another city while the youngest brother Hassanein (Omar Sharif) aspires to be a police officer which puts the family into financial difficulties. Nefisah falls in love and have an affair with the local grocer's son (Salah Mansour) and when he doesn't marry her she turns to night life to support her brother.


The tragic end of the film happens when Nefisah gets arrested by the police and her brother Hassanien bails her out and after an argument between them Nefisah commits suicide by throwing herself in the Nile and her brother follows her and throws himself too.
