Bienville is a village located in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 262.


Geography

Bienville is located at 32°21'9" North, 92°58'37" West (32.352635, _92.976816)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 28.6 km˛ (11.0 mi˛). 28.6 km˛ (11.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.09% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 262 people, 115 households, and 70 families residing in the village. The population density is 9.2/km˛ (23.8/mi˛). There are 158 housing units at an average density of 5.5/km˛ (14.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 56.49% White, 43.13% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 115 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 38.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the village the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $20,227, and the median income for a family is $20,909. Males have a median income of $30,417 versus $17,143 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,656. 22.7% of the population and 23.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.8% of those under the age of 18 and 22.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Bienville was to recall this incident two decades later in his representations to the king: “I obliged them [the English] to abandon their enterprise.” The event left a place name on the river: English Turn.

Bienville had to delay creating a permanent settlement on the lower Mississippi River until 1718, when he founded the city of New Orleans on a crescent-shaped section of the river 100 miles from the mouth.
While a French colony, Louisiana was governed alternately by the crown and by several chartered proprietors, who contracted with the crown for administration of the colony and a trade monopoly in exchange for settlers and slaves to supply the colony with goods.
