History
The breed is seldom found outside Germany, its country of origin. The breed was first imported into the USA in 2003. The History of the Biewer Yorkshire a la' Pom-Pon The Biewer Yorkshire a la’ Pom Pon, pronounced (Bee-vair) originated in Hunsruck, Germany in 1984. Mr. and Mrs. Werner & Gertrude Biewer started the first Biewer Yorkshire though a gene mutation, also known as a recessive piebald gene, in their Yorkshire Terriers. Although Mr. Werner Biewer passed away in 1997, his legacy lives on through this exquisite rare breed. Biewer Yorkshires started with the master parents "Darling von Friedheck" and "Fru Fru von Friedheck". Both dogs were blue and tan and were world youth winners in 1981 at Dortmund. Their marriage brought the first blue, white and golden Biewer Yorkshire, "Schneeflocken von Friedheck", born in January of 1984. Mr. Biewer continued breeding his colored Yorkies to achieve their white bellies and four white paws. In 1989 the Biewer Yorkshire was accepted as it own breed with the ACH German e.V. As we know them today, the Biewer Yorkshire a' la Pom Pon has enchanted us with their elegant coloring and disposition. The breed standard is that of a Yorkshire Terrier except for the coloring. The head must have three colors; black or blue, white and gold in good symmetry. The belly, chest, legs and the tip of the tail is white. The tail is full. The back is blue or black with white in it. The hair is silky, not curly.
Breed recognition Biewer fanciers are working towards recognition of the breed in the United States. The IABCA was a member of the German organization who had approved the Biewer in Germany, so the first Biewer puppy was shown in the US in June of 2003. The first Best In Show for the Biewer in the USA took place in November of 2003. Biewers have been participating in Rare Breed Shows during 2005 and 2006. A National Breed Club was formed for the Biewer in the USA in 2003 and is known as the American Biewer Club (ABC). This club was the first club formed in the USA to support the breed as it was originally bred for using the original Biewer lines. The ABC abides by the German Breed standard and supports the original German Biewer Club. The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (BYTCA) has been established to educate and promote the health and welfare of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Breed. They are recognized by the IBC which is the club that holds the original registry Mr. Biewer registered his dogs with. Their members have brought together many of the best blood lines Germany has to offer, in order to produce the best quality Biewer Yorkies possible. Do not be misled. The Biewer Yorkie is a breed of it's own and not a mix. For more information about the history and standard of the Biewer please visit them at: http://www.bytca.org The National Biewer Club of America (NBCA) is another Biewer club devoted to educating the public about the German Biewer breed. They boast Education, Excellence and Ethics in their sincere devotion to their beloved breed, the German Biewer Yorkshire a la' Pom Pon. They are steadfast in their belief that the German Biewer shall remain pure in its heritage and not be bred back to the Yorkshire Terrier. With members from the United States, Canada and Germany, the National Biewer Club of America's members have imported in some of the most beautiful and exquisite pedigreed Biewers that are available from Germany. Their club has very strict standards for it's members and they believe that the Biewer is a breed of it's own. For superb information on the Biewer including numerous pictures, the history, breed order, ethics and more, please vist their site at http://www.nationalbiewerclubofamerica.org There are currently 3 venues that the wonderful German Biewers can be shown in. They are as follows ... 1) International All Breed Canine Association http://www.iabca.com , 2) Rarities Inc. & North American Kennel Club (NAKC)http://www.vaxxine.com/rarities/index.htm and 3) The Rare Breed Club of Southwestern Ontario http://rbcswo.hypermart.net As a very new breed, there remains some controversy over whether the Biewer is a completely separate breed or is simply a colour variation of the Yorkshire Terrier. The Biewer is currently working towards being recognized by the major international kennel clubs. The Yorkshire Terrier, also known as a Yorkie, is a breed of small dog, one of many toy dog breeds. ...
