Big Bay is an unincorporated community located in Marquette County, Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 265.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 15.4 km˛ (5.9 mi˛). 9.9 km˛ (3.8 mi˛) of it is land and 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 35.63% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 265 people, 129 households, and 86 families residing in the community. The population density is 26.7/km˛ (69.2/mi˛). There are 300 housing units at an average density of 30.2/km˛ (78.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the community is 96.23% White, 0.00% African American, 2.26% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 129 households out of which 15.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.47.


In the community the population is spread out with 15.1% under the age of 18, 3.4% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 37.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.3 males.


The median income for a household in the community is $34,750, and the median income for a family is $42,708. Males have a median income of $35,417 versus $24,375 for females. The per capita income for the community is $18,620. 11.4% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
