Housemates

This year there are 17 housemates, with 14 having been brought in on the launch night — once again a rise in the number of housemates being brought in at the start. After Shahbaz walked on Day 6, and Dawn was ejected on Day 8, two new housemates - Sam and Aisleyne, were brought in on Day 12, after the Meal or No Meal task.

Following the departure of George on Day 13 there is speculation as to whether there will be an additional housemate sent into the house with the Golden Ticket winner on Day 23. [4]

Series 7 has become the series to have the most housemates leave without being evicted, currently standing at three housemates. The previous record was series 3, in which two housemates walked out.

Pete Bennett

Pete in the Big Brother Diary Room
Pete in the Big Brother Diary Room

Pete is a 24-year-old rock and roll singer from Brighton, who has Tourette syndrome. This has led some campaigners to accuse the makers of the show of exploitation and creating a situation that will be a further hindrance to the greater understanding of Tourette syndrome by the public. This is due to the opinion that his profane outbursts will only draw viewers for their humour value. However, this symptom is rare in Tourette sufferers (fewer than 15% exhibit Coprolalia). Pete's initial thoughts were that he liked Lisa a lot. In the Diary Room, after Shahbaz walked, he felt maybe he could have done more to help, but in the end — as he saw it — Shahbaz shot himself in the foot. Pete's band is called Daddy Fantastic, which claims to be influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Scooby Doo amongst others. Shahbaz is a gay 37-year-old "unemployable", Scottish born Glaswegian. He styles himself as "the paki poof" or a "wacky paki", a phrase that caused offence with at least one housemate. Shahbaz has been criticised by some housemates for what they regard as childish behaviour. It was generally accepted that he did not adapt well to life in the house. Through his acting-out behaviour and "theatrical" monologues Shahbaz had been cast aside by his fellow housemates, except Pete, Glyn and George. Shahbaz was being monitored by production team psychologists following comments that he intended to commit suicide whilst in the house [11] and on Day 6 he agreed to leave the Big Brother house. On this final day in the house he was subject to obvious bullying and ostracisation by the other housemates, which included them locking him outside in the garden, mocking him, stealing his clothes while he was swimming, insulting him, throwing his breakfast in the bin and then shouting at him for wasting food, and pointedly leaving the sitting room upon his entrance. Those leaving included Pete, but George stayed in the room. After leaving the house, it had become clear that Shahbaz understated his mental condition to psychologists, therefore cheating the selection process [12]. Dawn was ejected from the house after a coded communication with the outside world, thereby breaking one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother. [14] Dawn told Big Brother about this rule-breaking when they were reluctant to let her leave the house, thus forcing them to remove her. When called to the diary room to be informed of her ejection, she consistently talked over Big Brother in order to emphasise that in her view she was not removed, but left voluntarily, which made sense given that she had received her coded message to leave the house.

During her time in the house Dawn was subject to accusations by fellow housemate Nikki of causing a BO epidemic in the house's towels and clothes; however, Dawn did not find out about this during her stay in the house. Glyn Wise

Glyn is an 18-year-old and the self-proclaimed "Sexiest Lifeguard in North Wales" and nudist from Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd. He entered the house in his lifeguard attire complete with buoyancy aid. His first language is Welsh and told Big Brother in the Diary Room that being in the house is improving his English. Despite the relatively high regard with which Glyn seems to hold himself and his physical appearance, he has achieved little success with the female members of the house (aside from receiving a lap dance from 35-year-old Lea). As he was not invited to join the "Big Brotherhood" in the first task, he will not receive his suitcase for the duration of his stay in the house. Grace Adams-Short

Grace is a 20-year-old dance teacher from London. A self-confessed Sloane Ranger. Grace has been getting close to both Mikey and George in particular, and it was disputed both in and outside of the house as to which one she will "pair up" with, until George left. While in the house, she stated that she would not model for Nuts or Zoo but would for something like FHM. She also claimed she would not pose topless due to her job. Her time in the house heralded a number of exposes on her life, including claims that she was a childhood bully[15], a failed pop star [16] and a nymphomaniac with a penchant for sex games[17]. Nikki cried on the first night in the house because Big Brother refused to provide her with bottled water and she refused to drink the tap water. Whilst in the diary room, she said she was upset because Big Brother didn't give her her £16 make-up remover or her clothes. Nikki has been known to become emotional at the slightest provocation, though this became more severe as the second week began. Her grievances ranged from a lack of male attention, to the cramped nature of the house, to missing her friends and family. Nikki also demonstrated a distinct lack of aptitude in cooking food (she allowed a wok containing only olive oil to burn) while criticising a meal prepared for the house by Grace.

It is largely for these reasons that Nikki commands little respect among most of her other housemates. The members that have not criticised her directly about her naïvity have readily done so in secret.

Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace

Aisleyne is a 27-year-old model and promotions girl from London, who entered on Day 12 as a prize won during the Meal or No Meal task in week 2. She sparked bitching among Imogen, Grace, and Sezer who vowed to give her a hard time in the house.

Week 1

Lisa and Shahbaz became leaders of "The Big Brotherhood", and had to choose an unknown number of housemates to join. The chosen housemates would then receive their suitcases, and would be immune from the first eviction.

On Day 5, the housemates woke up to find all their food missing, but soon discovered it in the garden. Shahbaz later admitted that it was him. Shahbaz found himself more and more ostracised from the group and decided to walk.

By Day 7, Dawn, Bonnie and Glyn were the only members not part of the Big Brotherhood, and faced the public vote. When it was revealed that those housemates not in the Big Brotherhood would be deprived of their suitcases for the duration of the show, Dawn went into the Diary Room and asked to leave Big Brother. Later that day, Dawn received a confidential message from her family "Your sister is ill." After she came out of the Diary Room she told Richard (in a whisper) "I have a code". The other housemates interrogated her on the point and she explained that her family would send her that message if "things were getting too heavy".

Week 2

On Day 8, Dawn was ejected from the house for breaking one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother, and Bonnie was named as the first evictee in a landslide vote on Day 9.

On Day 10, the housemates were given a task called "Meal or No Meal" in which the housemates must answer questions given to them in order to win different groups of food. On Day 12, for the final part of the task, all housemates were gathered in the lounge. Big Brother then asked Pete to go to the diary room, and Glyn to go to the garden, where 4 boxes were waiting for him. Pete was asked the questions that were answered incorrectly previously and successfully got 3 out of 4 correct winning the housemates back their "Toilet Rolls and Miscellaneous", and 2 new housemates - Aisleyne, a model from London, and Sam, a male-female cross-dresser. The question Pete got wrong was worth a speed boat. Some of the original housemates didn't adapt well to the new arrivals; criticising them within an hour of their arrival. Aisleyne was the primary target. Sezer launched a mission to make them slip up as they said they hadn't seen any episodes of the show. He tried to conjour up support for his "team". Imogen told him to respect Sam and refer to the newbie as a "she", but also accepted Sezer's claim that he would "bully" the newcomers into submission.

On Day 13 George walked and both Sezer and Imogen were banned from voting for the next eviction having discussed voting tactics the night before. Day 13 also saw the first round of nominations, and it was revealed to the housemates on Day 14 that Richard, Sezer and Lea were up for eviction.

Betting Odds

Pete started and has remained firm favourite with the bookies to win Big Brother. [22]

Criticism

Big Brother has faced accusation for exploiting a man with Tourette syndrome by accepting him as a housemate. The Tourette Syndrome Association claimed BB7 contestant Pete Bennett could suffer in the house, and also stated parents were concerned their children could be subjected to bullying as a consequence of Pete's behaviour inside the house. Channel 4 said the inclusion of Pete could educate people about the syndrome. [26] Tourette syndrome (also called Tourettes syndrome, Tourettes disorder, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, GTS or TS) is an inherited neurological disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by the presence of multiple motor tics and at least one phonic tic, which characteristically wax and wane. ... Further criticism arose when contestant Glyn Wise was reprimanded for communicating in Welsh to fellow housemate Imogen Thomas. Following the incident the Welsh Language Society has complained to Channel 4, Ofcom and S4C, saying "are we moving towards a state where "big brother" is watching over us and deciding what language we can and cannot speak?"
